One of the more obvious benefits of the MotioCI product is its ability to automatically version control Cognos reports, queries, packages, etc.
Each time a report author saves a report to the Content Store, MotioCI silently records the updated content, who made the change and at what time it was made. From the MotioCI user interface, users can :
- View historical versions of BI Artifacts
- View historical outputs for each version of a Report
- Do "diffs" between multiple versions of the same BI Artifact
- Revert to a prior working version of the Artifact
- Promote an Artifact to an upstream BI environment
This implicit version control capability allows MotioCI to act as a "safety net" during Cognos development. If one report author accidentally saves over another report author's changes, team members can quickly detect the situation and recover the changes. If the latest version of a report is not working the night before a demo, users can easily roll back to a working version from a prior date.
MotioCI also does a lot more than version control of BI content.
